Owners of
mixed breed dogs can now join an organization especially for them. Handlers
and their mixed breeds can compete and earn titles in obedience,
conformation, tracking, agility, fly-ball, backpacking, therapy work, lure
coursing and herding. The Mixed Breed Dog Clubs of America (MBDCA) is the
national organization and it offers registration to all altered mixed breeds
and purebreds that are barred from competition in the American Kennel Club.
You will have the opportunity to work toward completion of titles or
certificates, under judges who have been certified by the MBDCA. The club
has its own set of regulations to meet the unique needs of mixed breeds,
while still fitting in at fun matches and Show’n’Gos.
In obedience, you can earn titles at the novice, open and utility levels.
These titles are earned in a manner similar to the AKC rules, with a few
differences, the most obvious one being legs and titles can be earned at fun
matches in addition to sanctioned MBDCA chapter events.
The conformation standard is designed to promote a happy and healthy family
dog, and focuses on general soundness and balance as well as excellent
temperament and manners. Any dog working toward a conformation championship
must achieve the novice obedience title (MB-CD) before earning more than
half of the points needed for a conformation championship.
Tracking and lure coursing rules are similar to AKC rules.
The herding certificates are issued in cooperation with the American Herding
Breed Association and the Australian Shepherd Club of America.
Agility certificates are issued by the North American Dog Agility Council
(NADAC), United Kennel Club (UKC), or the United States Dog Agility
Association (USDAA).
MBDCA also acknowledges all titles earned by mixed breeds through the United
Kennel Club (UKC).
Handlers are responsible for knowing the rules governing any form of
competition in which they are planning to participate/compete. MBDCA Rules
and Regulations are issued with the New Member Packet, along with all the
forms necessary to start competing.
The Washington Mixed Breed Dog Club (WMBDC) is a chapter of the MBDCA. The
chapter meets regularly for business meetings and activities or events. Each
year the WMBDC has two main events, an annual fund raising fun match or show
‘n’ go in the spring, and the Regional Specialty is held in October. Each
year, a National Specialty is held, and is hosted by a different chapter.
Approximately every three years, the WMBDC will host this event. The
Specialties are open only to the dogs of the members of the MBDCA and its
chapters.
The WMBDC has its own newsletter, Mutterings, which is issued every
other month. The MBDCA has a newsletter as well, titled Mixed Reviews,
that comes out quarterly. As a member of the WMBDC, you will receive both
publications.
Members of the MBDCA set an example of responsible dog ownership for all dog
owners. All dogs registered with the MBDCA and its chapters must be altered,
or have veterinary proof of sterilization. Too many dogs die every year from
a lack of responsible ownership, and our members do not contribute to these
tragic statistics.
The MBDCA is an organization primarily for mixed breed dogs and their
owners. Nonetheless, MBDCA believes that all dogs and their owners deserve
an opportunity to compete in dog sports. Accordingly, the MBDCA registers
handicapped purebreds that are barred from AKC competition. Persons wishing
to register a handicapped purebred need to complete a special certificate,
obtainable from the MBDCA Membership Secretary; this completed certificate
is included with the other papers necessary to register the dog with the
MBDCA.
The Membership Secretary for the MBDCA is Linda Lewis; email
or call
740-259-3941.
You can register your dog with a fancy name, or you can use a simple name,
or just use the dog’s call name. There is no limit to how many letters you
can use in your dog’s name.
