Molly is
living proof that angels exist. I found her at the Humane Society on April
15, 2000. She was 9 months old. I brought her home to a 13 year old rottie/Shepard
mix named Boo, a 9 month old cat named Shorty and a 7 year old guinea pig,
Handsome Man. Molly wormed her way right into the family chasing Shorty (Shorty
chases back) giving Handsome wet kisses and tormenting her big sissy by
pulling off her bandannas. Molly went to obedience classes and then started
agility when she tore both ACL’s and had to have TPLO on both knees at 14
months old. Big sissy, Boo, was very concerned over Molly even though she
would never have admitted it. While Molly was recouping from the TPLO
surgeries Handsome, the guinea pig, would snuggle up with her on her bed. It
was very cute seeing this, then 65 pound, black lab cuddle with a 2 pound
orange haired guinea pig!
When Molly was 2 she lost her big sissy to hip
dysphasia and then six months later she lost her friend Handsome who, at
almost 9, was a very old guinea pig. The house was quite with just Molly and
Shorty, but they managed to keep themselves entertained. Then in late 2001
Molly got her Delta Society certification which enabled her to visit nursing
homes, hospitals, and the local Boy’s & Girls Club. In 2003 Molly was active
in helping S.O.D.A establish the Grandview off-leash park in Sea-Tac, WA. In
2004 Molly began visiting at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way where she
continues to visit almost weekly on Tuesday afternoons. 2004 also brought a
new addition to the house by the way of Rufus the guinea pig who was adopted
from the Humane Society. Rufus wasn’t use to being handled when he came to
us, but he was a sad, pathetic thing sitting there in the open at the HS in
the cat room with all the cats drooling over him and I couldn’t leave him
there. Deciding there was hope for him, and knowing that if anybody needed
rescuing before he became snake food it was this guy, I took a chance. Molly
played a big role in his rehab and growth into a loving, squawking, carrot
eating, hay hogging snuggle bug of a pig.
Molly also joined the WMBDC in 2004 where she has made
some very good human and canine friends. She especially likes to play with
Chaos a lab/Dalmatian mix. Since joining the WMBDC, Molly has gotten her CGC
and earned a leg on her CD title. She hopes to finish her CD by the end of
2005.
In March 2005 Molly began a program called Tutors With
Tails which is a humane education and reading program for kids that is run
by the Pierce County Humane Society in conjunction with the Tacoma Library
system. For two hours most every Saturday you can find Molly at one of the
Tacoma public libraries listening to kids practice their reading skills. She
really likes to get the kids who can multi-task by rubbing her belly and
reading to her at the same time!
Today Molly is a happy, healthy, beautiful, wonderful
and of course spoiled girl who loves to chase tennis balls at the dog park
and swim in any kind of water that she can find. She loves volunteering, I
can tell by the wag of her tail and how she gets excited when we come around
the corner to the hospital or library, and is doing well at her obedience.
As she lies on my feet under the computer desk, belly positioned for a rub
should I be so inclined to give one, I can honestly say that Molly is living
proof that angels exist.
